All of our products are vacuum packed for extra hygiene and freshness. They are all also frozen. The date on our packs is the date of manufacture NOT a best before date.
At home we have our own dedicated ‘defrosting tub’. Its stays on the bottom shelf in the fridge. We take out the next days food the night before and as if by some kind of doggy food magic its ready to feed in the morning!
Use all packs within two days of opening.
Digestive enzymes break down food so it can be absorbed and utilised by the body. Raw food has enzymatic activity. When dogs eat the raw food that they are designed to thrive on, they receive plenty of food enzymes, which in turn aid digestion.
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria. They are present in a healthy intestinal system.
For an adult dog try starting with around 2-3% of their ideal body weight. Keep an eye on their weight, then simply adjust amounts accordingly. The Barf Diet is not an exact science and every dog is different. Be prepared to adjust as you go along. You will soon also become an expert poo watcher! Stools will also tell you if you are feeding too much bone or offal. Again, simply adjust accordingly and you will both be fine!
Do not worry. Raw food is full of naturally occurring water. All the moisture needed to digest raw food is contained in raw food! A lower sodium intake is actually a part of the reason that dogs drink less on the Barf Diet. The real reason is simply because raw food has not had the water removed like kibble has.
Salmonella is everywhere, not just in raw meats. A number of kibble brands have been found to contain a high salmonella reading. This has lead to huge recalls! Simple employ basic food hygiene practises, as you would with your meats for human consumption. We have to regularly send our products for vigorous microbiological testing. Anything with a salmonella reading would, as per regulations, have to be immediately disposed of and would NOT be allowed to go out for sale.
You can teach an old dog new tricks! We would recommend adding some probiotics to the diet to help restore the good bacteria in the system. This will help to fight off any bad bacteria lurking around in there! This also helps to increase your veterans immunity. Yoghurts with live cultures are an excellent for this. Start slow, introduce new proteins every few days. Be sure to build up slowly at your dogs own pace. This will in turn give you both a chance to adjust.
Yes you could, however you need to remember why you made the decision to switch to a biologically appropriate diet! Kibble and raw are digested at different rates. It is not recommended to feed both in the same meal. Feeding together increases the possibility off illness from microbes.
